From Homeless to Harvard

The Center for Urban Connections, the Student Association of Social Workers (SASW), the Institute for Women’s Studies and Services and Metropolitan State College of Denver have organized a movement to raise awareness on campus about homelessness issues by promoting the book, “Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard” by Liz Murray.

The organizations listed above have committed to their cause by displaying flyers around campus advertising free copies of the book, inspiring student’s to attend a book review and to learn of volunteer opportunities to serve homeless individuals.

To provoke a student’s attention to the flyer, they created a big, bold-faced title for the event. It says, “Homeless to Harvard: Continuing our Exploration of Homelessness Issues.” This title provokes interest, based on the commonly held belief in public relations that people are inherently good, and will be interested and inspired by such a topic.
