A Place to go for a Good Ole' Laugh

In Greenwood Village there is a place you can go with friends and family to have drinks, eat, and the best part laugh out loud. That place is the Comedy Works at the Landmark DTC.

The Comedy Works has shows going on almost every night seven days of the week with multiple shows a night.  The Comedy Works is know for having big named comedians perform on their stage such as: Rob Schneider, Dave Chappelle, Joan Rivers, George Lopez and many other.  The Comedy Works love to support local Denver comedians and even helping to jump start their career.

When arriving at the Comedy Works we bought our tickets at the ticket booth inside the front entrance.  Ticket prices are priced based on the headliner comedian performing that night. Prices of tickets range from about $10-$30.  After purchasing our tickets we were seated in the show room to wait until the show started.  In the front of the show room there is a small stage with a mike and a bar stool.  There is a Comedy Works sign hanging on a silver glittery wall with the lights focusing on the sign.  The seating in the show room is very close and intimate.  The room can hold about 150 – 200 people.  They also have a balcony for extra seating and at the back of the room there are booths for bigger parties.  You will be sitting close to someone you do not know.  You don’t get elbow room like in a movie theater.  While we waited for the show to start we ordered appetizers and drinks. You can order anything from Lemon Drop Martinis to a New Belgium’s Seasonal beer on tap. They also have non-alcohol beer like O’Doul’s Amber and virgin cocktails.

The show started at exactly 9:45 p.m. with Chuck Roy, a local Denver Comedian as the opening act of the night and the master of ceremonies, MC.  Roy is also known for being one of the semi-finalists on NBC's “Last Comic Standing”.   Roy came up on stage and began to greet audience members whose seats were right in front of the stage.   Roy’s jokes had a Denver connection to the audience members.  For example, he talked about the light rail, the DTC business district and the locals.  Roy’s opening act lasted about 15 minutes before introducing the next comedian.  Noah Garden Shorts, a Denver native currently living in Atlanta.  During his short 10 minute performance he invited an audience member to come up and help him out with his skit.   The next comedian to come up was Steve Gastineau.  He was another local comedian and he talked about the infamous blue horse with the evil red eyes that we all see when leaving D.I.A.  After Gastineau, who was on stage for about 20 minutes, Roy came back up.  Roy talked about upcoming shows and introduced the main headliner comedian of the night, Todd Glass.

On Friday, February 3, Todd Glass was the headliner comedian of the night. Glass is a TV comedian who is a regularly seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, and Comedy Central.

Glass flew into Denver on Wednesday, February 02, and his first show was on Thursday.  Tom Nash an employee of the Comedy Works who has been working there since the grand opening in the Fall of 2008, said “Thursday night we had about 15 people in the audience, it was small due to the weather but that was one of the funniest shows we have ever had and Todd is by far one of my favorite comedians to come here.”  With such a small audience on Thursday night, Friday night also had a small audience turn out, it was a slow night.  On stage Glass interacted with staff members of the comedy club and invited them up on stage to be apart of his show.  He had the workers join him to do a funny dance skit.  Glass also interacted with the audience by making fun of some of the audience members and the workers.

To paraphrase, Glass talked and joked about dinner parties.  Early in his show he talked about how some audience members like to interrupt the show being rude or try to be cool and funny.  He said when you do that don’t be negative.  He said he will call you out and make fun of you.  Watch the video below to get a complete understanding.

Back to his dinner party story he started off by saying how he just downright hates hosting dinner parties.  When he does dinner parties he requests that his guests bring a dish to share.  He said he expects them to arrive at his house with dishes completely finished.  Instead the dishes are not finished and his guests want to finish cooking at his house.  That just drives him crazy. His guests make his kitchen a mess and make more dirty dishes to be cleaned.  He asked the audience if they like to go to dinner parties.  Most everyone said yes, except for one lady.  This lady sat behind me and she was a “Negative Nancy” the entire night.   While the whole audience answered yes this lady shouted no!  Since she was being rude and negative, Glass called her out. Saying yeah you don’t like dinner parties because maybe no one ever wants to invite you over.  The whole audience was laughing, even the lady. She took the joke with great stride since it is only just a joke.
Glass had the whole audience laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.  All jokes and stories told that night had adult humor and sometimes was inappropriate.  The audience enjoyed every single minute of the show.  Glass’s show was about 45 minutes long.  Roy ended with saying thanks to everyone for coming out and to go to the Lila B. bar lounge for more cocktails and drinks.  After the show Todd Glass was out in the lobby selling his CDs and mingling with audience members.  In the Lila B. bar the comedians of the night were in there having some drinks.  You could even have a drink and talk with them.

The Comedy Works is known for having good hospitality for their comedians and audience members.  Nash said “George Lopez says we are the ‘cruise ship of comedy clubs’ because we treat people very well.”   USA Today says that the Comedy Works is one of the best “Top Five Comedy Clubs in the country.”   The Comedy Works has shows going on almost every night seven days of the week with multiple shows a night.  They even have shows for ages 18 and up but should check on the website for 18+ nights.   The Landmark also has a restaurant called the Lucy Restaurant where you can go for dinner before or after the show.  On the third floor there is the Curtis Ballroom for weddings, bar mitzvahs, birthdays or any event and have your own comedian perform. The Comedy Works is a great place to go for a fun night and have some laughs with friends and family.
