What does the X-Games have to offer?

Aspen, Colorado is known for its luxurious ski and lodge resorts, beautiful scenery, expensive taste and being home to the famous and fortunate. But through the weekend of January 27-30 the town had the attention of millions around the world for something else. The 2011 Winter X Games. While many were there for the competition and skiing, some went to enjoy what else the games had to offer, like great food, contests and prizes, and live music.

 Food
If you were at the games all day long, you could grab just about anything to satisfy your hunger. Walking into the food court you knew there were some lip-smacking things being cooked up, anything from chicken tenders, burgers, hot dogs and grilled sandwiches, to soups and salad, steaks, ribs, and a wide selection of pastas. There was also a spectacular beverage & dessert bar where you could create your own smoothies, coffee and lattes, hot chocolate, ice cream plates and brownies and cookies galore.

Contests/Games
Jeep was a huge sponsor of the X-games, giving out prizes left and right. All you had to do was enter in their e-mail club, (which sends out new Jeep offers/specials and promotions) and every hour they pulled out a new winner. The prizes included gift-cards, snowboarding gloves and goggles, and even free snowboards. All of those winners were then put into a drawing to win a brand new Jeep Cherokee.

Music
Denver natives, Breathe Carolina from Fearless Records was the featured band of the first two days, and really enjoyed their a performance unlike any of their others. “We are so used to playing club shows at venues, or summer festivals where we play in the hot sun. The cold was really weird to play in,” says Kyle Even of the band. “But it was such a great time and something new for us. Being born and raised in Colorado, it was cool to show our support."

Leisure
The great thing for spectators is the X Games is free for all ages to watch their favorite athletes, while also able to enjoy the slopes themselves throughout the day. You can actually ski alongside the competitors and watch from the top instead of at the bottom of the hill. All day long you would see skiers and boarders taking breaks to watch the games for a bit, then after a few minutes they’d finish up their run. And because so many were watching the games, the slopes were less crowded and calm for skiers to enjoy.

The next time you’re thinking of planning a lavish winter outing, you may consider a scenic venture to the superb town of Aspen, home of the Winter X Games.

  1. I like that you describe many aspects of the experience, the food, the music, and the event. Maybe just add subheads to organize each topic. Good job!
