MSCD Digs Themselves into Hole at Colorado School of Mines

Not in Their House

Metro State shot a season low 33.3% from the field in their 48-65 loss to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday night in Golden. The home crowd rattled the Roadrunners in Golden, jumping on them early and not looking back. The Roadrunners leading scorer this season, junior guard Reggie Evans, scored just 4 points on 2-10 shooting, his lowest output of the season.

When asked about his poor shooting performance, Evans said “I couldn’t hit anything. Just a rough shooting night”. Evans scored 22 points in Metro State’s victory over Colorado School of Mines in January.

Colorado School of Mines was fueled by the home crowd of over 1300 people, sparking a 6-0 run with 11 minutes left in the first half with Mines hitting back to back 3-pointers. The student section from CSM was rocking all night, and when Sean Armstrong threw down a monster dunk early in the first half, the building erupted. Everybody on Metro State's side looked completely stunned, all the way tdown to the cheerleaders that traveled to Golden for the game.

Weak Production

Freshman guard Brandon Jefferson came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points, hitting 5 of those from the free-throw line, but the Roadrunners couldn’t get much production from anybody else on the team. Usually a pretty balanced scoring attack, Metro State finished with only 48 points, having only one player finish in double-digit scoring.

Sophomore Center Jonathon Morse fouled out of the game with about 14 minutes left on a questionable blocking call by the referee. This came at a time when the Roadrunners cut the Orediggers’ lead down to just seven, but once their leading rebounder and second leading scorer fouled out of the game, the momentum shifted back in Colorado School of Mines favor from that point on.

The Roadrunners usually impenetrable defense could not stop Colorado School of Mines senior guard Sean Armstrong who poured in a season high 28 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. Armstrong had a big game from the free-throw line as well, hitting 12 of 15 from the stripe.

Looking Ahead

Metro State drops to 17-4 with the loss Saturday, putting them now 1 game behind Colorado School of Mines for 1st place in the conference. Each team has 14 wins against teams within the RMAC conference.

Metro State will look to bounce back this week as they travel to Nebraska to face two in-conference opponents, Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney.
