How far do we go for liberty?

After September 11, 2001, American citizens were able to hold George W. Bush's  "war on terror" close in their minds. Every time one turns on the TV or opens up a newspaper, they experience war only through pictures. War is a "conflict carried by force of arms as between nations or between parties within a nation.(dictionary.com)" War not only brings chaos, death tolls, and displaces many but also can bring freedom, liberty and democracy.

Fetien Gebre-Michael

So when is war appropriate? Fetien Gebre-Michael says that "war is appropriate only when the liberty and freedom of the citizens of that state are being compromised." The liberties and freedoms of the citizens can be compromised when their right to vote is taken away, the government moves toward dictatorship and the one ruler simply forgets the lower class or just simply takes care of his fellow government officials rather then his own people. To Fetien, war "means nothing but chaos, hate and unnecessary bloodshed."
Jack Dille

Jack Dille, a sophomore at the University of Colorado at Boulder, claims war is accepted when "one force is clearly evil, as in the Nazi's case, or if the regime is really oppressive to it's people." By evil, Jack means the ruler shows no mercy upon their own people. When Jack hears "war", he automatically thinks "middle east, terrorism, news, WW2, video games" and how what little effect war has on his daily life.

Naweid Maten
"Whenever there is a legitimate threat to the people of your country, war is the only option," says Naweid Maten. After the 9/11 attacks, Naweid and his Middle Eastern family were harassed and ridiculed for their "cousins" actions even though they had no connection to the attacks on the World Trade Center Twin Towers as well as the Pentagon. For Naweid, war not only means that "tons of innocent people are gonna die and they will keep dying until someone wins" but also "the possible destruction of a nation and tons and tons of money we don't have is being wasted."

War is accepted if it benefits the oppressed. It's never truly okay because lives are taken and families are torn apart.
