Arson Suspected as Cause of Tragic Fire at Lincoln Downs Race Track

Police suspect arson is the cause of a barn fire that occurred at Lincoln Downs Race Track in Springfield this morning at 4 AM, one day before the opening of racing season.

15 of the 25 horses that were stabled in the barn are dead. “These are my best friends,” said Albert Ramos, horse jockey. “I feel like I want to cry.”

Ten horses were able to escape the one story wooden structure, including two who stampeded through the burning barnyard with their backs on fire.

The fire smoldered until noon and Arson Investigators surmise that foul play was involved. “It could have been of an incendiary nature because [the fire] started in the middle of the barn, not at the end,” said Dan Bucci, Assistant General Manager of Lincoln Downs Race Track.

"The fire is definitely suspicious," said Bernard Perry, Lincoln Fire Chief. So far there are no suspects, but one can be assured that investigators will overturn every lead they find to solve this terrible disaster.
